‘Cathedral’ 2004

Andrew’s mesmerizing photograph Cathedral was shortlisted with an Honorable Mention at the 2024 International Analogue Sparks Awards in the portrait category. The photograph, taken in the bay of the old cathedral ruins in Coventry, originally appeared in his first exhibition A View on the Ocean at The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in 2004 (a collection of black and white medium format photographs taken in Coventry and around the UK). Cathedral was also shortlisted in the Guardian Weekend Photography Prize in 2005.

“Cathedral is a portrait of my German friend Kat who came to my home town of Coventry to study drama and we immediately hit it off. Kat told me of her plan to create a solo performance of Sarah Kane’s dark autobiographic play 4.48 Psychosis and asked if I would take some promotional pictures for the show.. So one day after a coffee I suggested we walk to Coventry Cathedral to try some shots and on reaching the old cathedral ruins - the international symbol of peace and reconciliation - our conversation suddenly and solemnly turned to the Second World War. Within the ruins that were flattened by the Luftwaffe on November 14th 1940, we discussed how we felt about the war as both British and Germans. It felt that we were somehow compelled to address this topic as two friends, and that we were somehow inextricably connected to this event despite the passing of generations. The conversation struck a tone and a perfect moment to take a photograph of my new friend.”

Cathedral will be featuring in Andrew’s collection of early work entitled Tin Angel’s soon to be released..
